DOG TREATS

Dog treats, as well as play, are an essential part of reward based training, though many owners mistakenly use normal dog biscuits when training and then find that their dogs have become unresponsive to their commands. During training sessions it is essential that you always use “Smelly” treats to ensure that your dog is properly rewarded.


“Smelly” treats are generally considered to be Cheese, cut Sausages or for some special Smelly treats why not try one of our recipes below.

Hand-Feeding a Stray Dog

TUNA/SARDINE CAKE

1 x Small tin of Tuna/Sardines in oil

3 x Eggs beaten

¼ tsp Garlic Granules/powder

Plain flour


Mash tuna/sardines in a bowl

Pour eggs in and mix thoroughly

Stir in Garlic granules/powder

Add enough plain flour to make a thick cake like paste and transfer to microwavable dish

Cook on high for approx. 4 ½/ 5 ½ minutes depending on microwave power

Remove from bowl and cool on a rack

When cold cut up into small pieces and keep in fridge it will keep well for a week in an airtight container or alternatively freeze and defrost as required

DRIED LIVER

1lb TO 1 1/2lbs  PIGS OR LAMB LIVER

Garlic powder


Pre heat oven to about Gas mk.1, 100 fan, 125 ordinary electric

Chop liver into little finger nail sized pieces and put into a microwavable bowl.

Stir in some garlic powder

Cover and cook for approx 5 minutes stirring once halfway through.

Spread out on baking sheet, place on middle shelf and cook for 2hrs or until hard when pressed between fingers

LIVER AND GARLIC

Using ox or pigs liver gives the best results.
Place the uncooked liver on a baking tray – sprinkle with Garlic powder (not garlic salt)
Place in the oven at 180 degrees and cook till ‘dry’ – then cut into small pieces add more garlic powder – return to oven and cook slowly – till the liver is hard all the way through.
Let cool, and when cold can be bagged and will keep for weeks.
Can be cooked in a Pyrex dish in a microwave oven - with CARE

Sniffing a Hand

CHEESE AND GARLIC

1 cup wholemeal flour

1 cup grated cheese (strong cheddar)

1 tablespoon garlic powder - not garlic salt

1 tablespoon soft butter or margarine

1/2 cup of milk (I use goats)


Mix flour and cheese together - add garlic and soft butter - slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough - (you may not need all the milk)

Kneed on a floured board for a few minutes - Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness - Cut in to pieces and place on un-greased cooking tin

Bake at 180 degrees for 15 minutes - Let cool - till cold and firm - store in air tight container and or fridge.
